I have been using Accusharp for about ten years on everything from Kershaw, Cold Steel, Spyderco, Gerber, and SOG folding knives to Wusthoff, Sheffield, Forschner, Sabatier, and Henckels kitchen knives. None of my knives have been significantly reduced as described by Daniel in his review. I'm not arguing with his statements, just saying that my experience has been considerably different than his.
If starting with an extremely dull blade, you might have to take quite a bit of metal off to achieve a sharp edge, but after that all you will need is a few light strokes to maintain the edge. And remember that you should use a butcher's steel or ceramic rod MUCH more often than a sharpener.
There are any number of similar sharpeners, and I've tried many of them - but none work as well as the Accusharp.

I am always skeptical about knife sharpeners being able to work. I received these three as a gift, and I was really surprised. These sharpeners are incredibly simple yet highly effective. It doesn't take much effort with any of them and you will have the perfect cutting edge in no time. Each of these sharpeners is designed to force you to use the correct angle for sharpening. Just like they say in the product description, they take all the guess work out of sharpening at the correct angle. The knife sharpener was designed with a v in the stone that really shapes the cutting edge perfectly. The garden sharpener is designed to sharpen on one side of the blade and the scissor sharpener was designed to shape a flat edge. This is a really well conceived product idea and I would recommend this to anyone. I think the best feature of these sharpeners is that they don't require much effort or skill to get a perfect cutting edge.
I had an electric sharpener that used to mess up my kitchen knives. It required having to hold the knife at the correct angle to the moving stone. I could never get kitchen knives as sharp with the electric sharpener as I can with the Accusharp. I used the garden tool sharpener on some old garden hoes with a lot of oxidation. The hoes sharpened up really nicely, making it incredibly easy to bust roots. Another feature that I wasn't aware of until I received them is that replacement stones are supplied in the handles.
Highly recommended product.
